In the Footsteps of Paul – Ken Duncan Thomas Nelson (March 2009) Topic: Photographs; Apostolic Christianity Summary: A photobook of the travels of the Apostle Paul Rating:
|
Evaluating Ken Duncan’s In the Footsteps of Paul probably depends on what you are expecting. The heralded photographer does not disappoint with his photos in this quite stunning collection of shots covering the travels of the Apostle Paul in the apostolic age. The photographs are gorgeous and the book is well suited for a coffee table or waiting room in a Christian business near you. Those who love his work will undoubtedly be thrilled with the production this time around as well.
The weakness of the book lies in the text. Scripture readings, excerpts from notable Christians, and some unchallenging commentary fill the gaps between the photos but they accomplish little apart from filling space. In comparison to the quite stunning photographs, the interspersed text pales and one wishes that there had been someone working with Duncan who could have added something of historical or theological interest to the pages.
If all you really want is the photos, In the Footsteps of Paul is a dream come true. They are beautiful and at times breathtaking. If you are looking for some depth in discussing those photos, you will be sorely disappointed. However, the photos are of such high quality they carry the book on their own. It is still highly recommended for its photo content but with the aforementioned limitations.
