He is risen indeed!! I wish everyone a Happy Easter and let us share in the hope and joy that He has given through his conquest of the grave. O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?

One of the best Christian radio programs – maybe THE best was summarily executed on Holy Tuesday. Pastor Todd Wilkins and Jeff Schwarz, host and producer of Issues Etc. were both fired by the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and its flagship radio program KFUO. Initially, no reason was given and no warning so they could say goodbye to their listeners. The program was just cut and all traces of it was removed from the KFUO website to make it look as though it had never existed (the program’s on line archives were later restored due to the public furor).
Not surprisingly, a response has arisen from the ranks of the LCMS. Bloggers who fall into the ranks of what might be called traditional Lutheran faith and practice have widely condemned the action. A sample of the reaction can be seen at Weedon’s Blog, Cyberbrethren, and RAsburry’s Res.
The LCMS has given an official explanation that the decision was made for programmatic and business reasons. On the surface, this is pure beaureaucratic drivel by someone who doesn’t have enough spine to take responsibility for their own actions. The question remains thought WHO canceled it and WHY. After all, it was one of the most popular programs on KFUO and certainly the most respected among serious Christians. Why cancel a program that has added both listeners to your station (who will probably now be lost) and fostered an intellectual respect for LCMS scholars among other Christians? Why do it without warning and not give the program the farewell it so richly deserves? And why do it during Holy Week when the Church should be united in our focus upon the Passion and Ressurection of our Lord?
The answer might be found within the battles that have been waging in many churches – not just the LCMS. In the case at hand, those that affirm the beliefs and practices of Lutheranism are becoming a minority within the Lutheran denominations. The ELCA is rapidly giving in to the same Christless religion that has infected all the mainline Churches and the LCMS has in its rebellion against this increasingly embraced positions that are more in line with American Evangelicalism than its Lutheran roots. Thus in the final analysis, Issues, Etc. may have been too Lutheran for the Lutherans.
It is a true shame that such a catechetically rich and intellectually honest program as Issues, Etc. cannot find a place in the vast wasteland that is the Christian media. Just as Christian book stores have been overrun with trivial fare, so Christian radio and TV is for the most part entirely forgettable if not harmful to the health of the Church.
